Lisa and Frank Hart of True Vine Farm of Byhalia, Mississippi, have a small sign on their table at the farmers’ market: “No chemicals were used in the growing of this food.” They do not use chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizer. Instead, they use compost and practice intensive planting, where crops are planted close together so that it is difficult for weeds to form. They go through the plants and pick out any worms invading the crops, then feed them to the chickens. “If you put good things in the soil, it will produce good food,” said Lisa Hart. Their philosophy of no chemicals keeps the Harts busy, but they believe there are long-term benefits of not using chemicals to the soil—and to humans. “We don’t want our children to be afraid to pick something out of the garden and eat it,” said Lisa Hart.
