Farm to Fork with Andrew of Amerigo

The Memphis Farmers Market doesn’t just begin and end on a Saturday.  We’re lucky to partner with popular local chefs who use innovative and creative ways to bring the Market’s freshest food to their dining tables, and we call it the Farm to Fork Tour.  Our most recent Farm to Fork dinner was hosted at Amerigo, and it was creative indeed (roasted whole pig!) and everyone in attendance really enjoyed it.   Andrew Fischer reflects on the inspiration of the... Father's Day Brunch for one and for all.

My Dad pretty much covers the cool spectrum. He is a fan of the finest restaurants in town, but loves a piece of cornbread in his turnip greens just the same. Dad has served 30 plus years in the Shelby County District Attorneys office and he’s known to be fair, focused and dependable (and like I said, cool).  As his family we are big fans of his, and everyone who knows him will tell you he’s one of their favorite people.    I’m telling you about him because this weekend is... Peas: They're what's for lunch

Ever wonder what happens to all that yummy food after it leaves the market in various shopping bags and baskets? We do! We love to see the wonderful dishes you make and learn how you did it. Here's what I did with the peas I got on Saturday:   First, let me say that I love to cook. Second, let me say that while I love to cook, I am often too busy to spend much time in the kitchen...or stocking my pantry. I decided I wanted to make a simple lunch with my beautiful peas using only what I... Read More

Easy-Peasy Party Potatoes with a Shimmer

New potatoes or are the theme for this week’s market, and I have a fun and ridiculously easy recipe for you to use on them. This is courtesy of my wonderful Aunt Jill, who gave me these instructions when I called her recently in desperation for cheap and easy snacks for a big party I was throwing. I can only do hummus and pita so often, y’know? Here goes:   1.  Buy the smallest baby or new potatoes you can find (at the Memphis Farmers Market, of course), about 2 lbs. 2.  Wash the... Read More

What to do at the market after 11am?

Slept in again Saturday morning? No problem. Come down to the market anyway, there’s still plenty to do after 10am. Or 11am. This blog originally started out as What to do at the market after ten. It quickly turned into 11. I was very happy to find plenty of offerings still available – and not just a few either. All vendors still had great choices. The music was still going and there were still coffee and bagels left for breakfast. Or should that be brunch at 11am? Either way, for those of us... Read More

Will You Help Us Make TN's Model Farmers Market Even BETTER?

The Memphis Farmers Market (MFM) is considered by the TN Department of Agriculture to be the state's benchmark farmers market. As a "growers only" market (no resellers), the MFM has created a place for family-run and small acreage farmers to sell their crops directly to the public.   This is especially important at a time when consumers want to be able to trust that the foods they buy are healthy and nutritious -- and because, according American Farmland Trust, Tennessee is one of... Local Chef Grows Good Eating Habits at St. Jude

Miles McMath makes eating local easy for staff and patients with the St. Jude Farmers Market and community garden   - By Ashley Akin A peculiar epiphany led Miles McMath to set out to improve the accessibility of nutritious foods for the St. Jude staff just two years ago. He realized that the very people trying to make sure patients eat healthy don’t have much time to worry about their own eating habits.   “Our employees maybe don’t have time to go to the farmers... Peach Cobbler

My maternal family and I have a strong affinity for peaches. “Peaches” is the nickname of one of my uncles (so pervasive is this nickname that I did not know my uncle’s actual name until I was in high school). My late grandmother made what many consider to be the  Citizen Kane of peach cobblers. And peach cobbler was actually my first foray into cooking from scratch. One of my favorite things about summer is that it is the season of peaches (which are, in my opinion, the best dessert fruit).  ... Read More

Waiting for You This Saturday - Flowers, Veggies, Strawberries, Honey & More

This week's theme, "Flower Power" brings to mind a colorful array of blooms and bouquets. And, of course, there are flowers galore at the Downtown Memphis Farmers Market.   But this week think outside the bud, because broccoli will be abundant. Loaded with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants, broccoli heads are actually unopened clusters of flower buds. Rocket into Spring: Go Gaucho!

By J.J. Hermes   This month, as bunches of lovely greens are on offer at the Memphis Farmers Market, we go South of the border for dinnertime inspiration.     Way, way South of the border, past Mexico, the Equator and the rainforests of Brazil, lay the pampas of Argentina.     In these vast grasslands, cattle graze on estancias not unlike the pastures of West Wind Farms and Neola Farms right here in Tennessee.     The people who raise the beef are... Organic and Pesticide-Free Vendors

The term “organic” gets tossed around many times in discussions about food, but there are some misconceptions about it. The United States Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program defines organic as follows: “Organic crops are raised without using most conventional pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, or sewage sludge-based fertilizers. Animals raised on an organic operation must be fed organic feed and given access to the outdoors. They are given no antibiotics or growth... Read More
